Mexico Surfing Spots
Mexico is home to some lovely, warm, crystal blue water and great
waves. Mexico offers over 6,000 miles of coastline, with over 1,500 miles on the mainland Pacific. With Mexico's great weather, warm water, and good waves, you couldn't ask for anything more.
For the pacific mainland, the weather is warm year round, and board shorts are perfect in all seasons just about everywhere. The water is about 80 degrees year-round, except in some Northern areas where the temperature may drop into the mid seventies during the winter months. Further north, in the Baja area a wet suit for fifty and sixty-degree water is needed. In terms of swells, expect Southern swells to provide the best waves on the Pacific in Mexico.
The southern tip of Baja California is a great place for a surf trip - the place is a swell magnet and is totally lacking crowds. There is a large variety of waves to suit everyone from the beginner to the most experienced surfer.
Waves are generated all year round by the deep Southern Ocean low-pressure systems as well as more localized tropical storms. April to October is the main season, although June to October is hurricane season. Be sure to check out the waves in the Oaxaca region in the south, including Puerto Escondido - one of the best surf breaks in Mainland Mexico and the world.
